Bays spent thirty years in costume design working for such diverse groups as the Denver Center Theater Company, The Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Harrah's, the Hong Kong Repertory Theater, Off Broadway & Public Television. Frustrated by what she termed "making art by committee" she began attending classes at the Denver Art Student's League. This brought Deborah to " a peace, like coming home." Now she says "it seems strange that it took me so long to become aware of my longing to engage in the visual arts."
Deborah Bays creates ethereal revelations of light with pastels, doing mostly romantic still lifes that often harkens back to her years in the performing arts. Her work has been featured in Southwest art, Colorado Expression, and The Pastel Journal.
