Things to consider

Mats come in various grades depending on what they are made of.  Acid-free mats are made of purified wood fibers or 100% cotton and protect the artwork best at a reasonable cost.  Mat prices depend on size, decorative finishes on the mat and any intricate opening cuts you might choose to enhance the piece.

Mounting board is the backing that the art rests on and can range from cardboard to foam core covered in acid free paper.  Cardboard is made from wood pulp and certainly not recommended as it can discolor the art.  A good quality foam core should be used and can be laminated to the art work.  In most cases hanging art work from the foam core with conservation tape is best.  A brown paper dust cover should be used to seal the back of the frame for further protection.

When chosing a frame consideration should be given to the value of the print or item you are are framing.   If you are framing something with considerable dollar value, sentimental or historical value don't cut the art work to fit the frame. Altering the artwork decreases the value.   We recommend hanging the artwork in the frame with conservation tape rather than permanently gluing the work to a backing. Everything touching the art should be non-invasive and reversible.

At Texas Art Mart we offer all of the above framing solutions for your consideration and will take the time to work with you on your individual framing needs.
